Pandas and Arcos

The following is from Suzukichat. I like the idea of having names for the different levels. I think it would be a good idea to have a name for each level and used by all the teachers in Israel. That would be useful for when we have workshops, which I hope we will do again in the near future.

I like Panda for pre-twinkle and arco for book 1. I think each book should have a different name. Other suggestions I have are zahav and diamonds, for golden tone and diamond tone. Dr. Suzuki always said "diamond tone". Maybe Gold Tones for book 2 and Diamond Tones for book 3. Would love suggestions from other teachers.

What fun and useful things do you guys do with this piece in group class?

.
I have my first group of the year on Saturday and plan to have the
Panda/Arco kids use this piece in various ways. The Pandas are pre-Twinkle and the
Arco are Book 1/2, they are age 3-14

Forgotten Music

The following have been taken from Suzukichat.

NOW I love it when kids don't bring their books since we can do the whole
lesson with our EARS.
Jane Jackson

Frankly, I really don't see "forgotten" music as a problem, or even as
my problem. I see it as the parent's problem. The parent is the one
who is supposed to supervise the kids. I don't feel that it is my
responsibility to teach the kids all their life lessons all at once.

For one thing, I (almost) always have extra copies of the music. For
another, I may put the kid on the computer theory program (not usually)
or do all kinds of creative activities that are harder than what they
are working on. Somehow that motivates them to remember their music -
they don't usually want to work so hard again! :^)

Music lessons should be a pleasant time, not a time to get scolded.

About Suzukichat

Suzukichat is a Yahoo group where parents and teachers write in with questions, problems or anything that would be of interest to others in the group The questions and problems usually get lots of good answers from others in the group. If I read the Suzuki chat posts very much I usually get very inspired and have long wanted to find a good way to save certain posts. It could also be made into a book. Really some good stuff. Well, I have found a way. I am going to paste what I want to save on this blog, and with good labeling it should be easy to find what you want.

FOLK ALLEY RADIO

I want to share this radio station with yoou. It is on 24 hours a day and plays really good music. I love classical music but there is a lot of very good folk music too. This station has a lot of top quality instrumental music, includig lots of good fiddling. Some fantastic ones that I've never heard of before. Try it, I'm sure you'll like it.

A favorite of mine is Abigale Washurn and the Sparrow Quartet, In addition to the 24 hour radio stream, there are additional options. Click on MUSIC, then LIVE FROM FOLK ALLEY, then the Sparrow quartet., You have the option of just listening or watching a video. You must watch the first time. It is truely amazing. 2 banjos, violin and cello. What they do in their solo spots, well I've never seen anything like it. The banjo player Bela Flek is the best in the world, no exaggseration. and fiddler Cassey Driesen and the cellist, well you just watch it. ENJOY.
